Multicultural education–Great Britain. Multiculturalism– Great Britain. We set the authors of this series a number of challenges in terms of what to include in their text. We also need to provide students with strong theoretical perspectives and frameworks, focusing on relevant literature in an accessible and readable format. There is a need for relevant, core texts within Education Studies, which explore and critique contemporary issues across the discipline and challenge prevailing discourses of what education is about. Education Studies is an important subject area and should be at the heart of many faculties of education. Contextualized extracts from important primary texts ensure readers’ exposure to dominant contemporary theories in the field of education, by demystifying essential vocabulary and educational discourse, enabling the education student to engage with these texts in a meaningful way. The texts are structured to provide a clear grasp of the topic and to provide an overview of research, current debates and perspectives. The ongoing conceptual analysis of different ideas, which include assimilation, integration, anti-racism, helps to explain the evolution and development of multiculturalism. The book analyses the continuing influence of educational debates surrounding inclusion and diversity. The informants provided insights concerning the contemporary relevance of the issues being addressed in this book, that is: faith schooling the development of citizenship and, the debates surrounding the argument for promoting multiculturalism within educational contexts. The empirical data was collected through the distribution of 3 different questionnaires and 33 semi-structured interviews. The author’s practitioner knowledge as Programme Convenor for the MA in Education at Roehampton University and research experiences on: education history the relationship between education politicians and civil servants and, the concept of teacher professionalism enabled data to be collected from a sample of people working and interested in multicultural education. For several years, the author of this book has been promoting the possibilities of citizenship education in conference presentations and other publications. Phillip’s also touches on reducing social and cultural segregation but misses other issues covered in this book, for example, community cohesion. The difference concerning an integrationist conditional relationship between the state and individual, which involves terms such as responsibility, duty and tolerance in education policy documents will be highlighted alongside a multicultural celebration of cultural diversity. Issues described by Phillips, that is, integration are important when reflecting on multiculturalism because they challenge the focal concept being examined.
